Westinghouse wins Spanish low-level waste repository contract

19 July 2013

Westinghouse has been awarded a contract to provide architect engineering services in support of the El Cabril low- and intermediate-level nuclear waste repository in southern Spain.

The four-year operation and engineering support contract was signed byWestinghouse Electric Spain and the Spanish agency responsible for radioactive waste management and nuclear plant decommissioning, ENRESA. It covers design modifications and the preparation of technical and licensing documentation for the repository.

The El Cabril disposal facility, near Córdoba, was designed in the 1980s by Westinghouse Electric Spain, which was then known as INITEC Nuclear. The facility began to receive low- and intermediate-level waste from Spain's operating nuclear power plants in 1992.
