Vote in California good for Diablo Canyon

30 November 1998

A voter-initiated measure on the ballot in California, which could have resulted in the shut down of the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant, was overwhelming defeated on 3 November. PG&E Corp, which owns the nuclear plant, said the plant would have closed if voters had approved Proposition 9, a measure that sought to prevent utilities from recovering “stranded” nuclear investments in the state’s newly competitive electric market. California is one of 17 states that have restructured their utility industries to allow consumers to pick their own energy service provider. Proposition 9 lost by a margin of 73%-27%.
