US regulator approves 17% uprate for St Lucie 2

25 September 2012

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved a power uprate request by Florida Power & Light (FP&L) that will increase the power output of St. Lucie unit 2 by 17%.

FP&L submitted a licence amendment request on in February 2011, (supplemented several times since) to raise the thermal output of St. Lucie Unit 2 from 2070 to 3020 megawatts thermal, NRC said. This translates into the 17% increase in electricity generation capacity from approximately 853 to 1002 megawatts electric.

A similar uprate was approved for St. Lucie unit 1 on 9 July.

FP&L intends to implement the uprate at unit 2 “in the next few months,” according to NRC.
