US DOE support for Holtec’s SMR

26 August 2017

US-based Holtec International's SMR LLC subsidiary is to receive support from the US Department of Energy's Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) initiative for continued development of its SMR-160 small modular reactor. SMR LLC received a $500,000 GAIN Nuclear Energy voucher on 26 June, which can be redeemed for access to expertise and capabilities at a national laboratory. SMR LLC plans to work with Oak Ridge National Laboratory to develop an SMR-160 natural-circulation primary flow simulation engine and to perform a series of thermal-hydraulic stability analyses and simulations, Holtec said. Development of the SMR-160 began in 2011.
