Uranium mining partnership

30 July 2001

Tajik prime minister Akil Akilov and Russian first deputy atomic energy minister Valentin Ivanov have signed a protocol on working together in mining uranium and rare metals. They stressed the need for close ties between Tajik enterprises and Russian scientific institutions, their cooperation with the Russian Academy of Mining Sciences, as well as the setting up of a continually functioning commission.

The Tajik sites are less than 40% depleted. The Taboshar Ore Combine extracted around 10,000t of enriched ore in 1998. The combine is currently working at only 30% capacity due to insufficient funds.
