Two more US life extensions

19 November 2004

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has granted 20-year licence extensions to Dresden units 2 and 3, and Quad Cities units 1 and 2.

The units at Quad Cities, near Moline, are now licensed to operate until 14 December 2032 while at Dresden, near Morris, unit 2 may operate until 22 December 2029 and unit 3 until 12 January 2031. Both plants are operated by Exelon.

The two licence renewal applications were submitted together on 3 January 2003 and the NRC has concluded that there were no safety or environmental concerns because Exelon “had demonstrated the capability to manage the effects of plant ageing.”

The total number of US units that have received 20-year licence extensions now stands at 30.
