23 June 2007

Russia’s TVEL Corp is to supply low-enriched nuclear fuel to the VVR-SM research reactor in Uzbekistan.

According to a contract signed by TVEL, the US Department of Energy and the Nuclear Physics Institute of Uzbekistan, TVEL will supply the reactor with 21 fuel assemblies in Decemebr.

The supply is part of the Russian-US Reduced Enrichment for Research and Test Reactors (RERTR) project, aimed at reducing the potential threat of proliferation of highly enriched nuclear materials.

The 20% enriched uranium-235 will replace the highly enriched fuel currently used by the Tashkent reactor.

The fuel will be produced at one of TVEL’s companies, Novosibirsk Plant of Chemical Concentrates. One further supply under RERTR is planned for Septemebr when fuel will be delivered to the research reactor at the Dalata Nuclear Research Centre in Vietnam.
