Trusted for fuel rod insertion

1 February 2002

ICS Triplex has been contracted by engineering contractor Framatome to supply its Trusted emergency shutdown control technology to Duke Energy in order to control the operation of two PWR fuel rod insertion systems.

Framatome claims that it chose the Trusted technology for a number of reasons:

• Its ability to distribute intelligence throughout the system, right to the I/O models, to reduce data traffic, speed up response times and enhance reliability.

• The ability of ICS to supply embedded firmware for precision frequency-modulated control of the insertions motors. Other control systems Framatome considered all required separate motor control, which would have added considerable programming and integration complications and increased the number of potential failure modes.

ICS bases its fault-tolerance on RunSafe 3-3-2-0, a proprietary technology in which 64-bit processors give 1msec sequence of event resolution, yet which ensures availability by multiple-level assessment of possible fault signals.

Trusted is programmed in IEC61131-3 configuration languages and communicated to other control systems via a dual redundant MODBUS link, OPC and open Ethernet networks.
