The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved the Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) licence amendment request to use Watts Bar 1 to produce tritium for the US Department of Energy (DoE). This will allow TVA to insert up to 2304 tritium-producing burnable absorber rods into the Watts Bar 1 core each fuel cycle.
