Tepco restarts last reactor shut down for safety checks

13 July 2005

Japan’s Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) has restarted the last of the 17 reactors that were shut down for additional safety checks in 2003 after the utility was found to have falsified safety reports in 2002.

The 460MWe Fukushima Daiichi 1 unit in Fukushima prefecture is the oldest owned by Tepco at 34 years, and was the last to be restarted.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency ordered the suspension of operations at the plant in November 2002.
