Temelin agreement

29 December 2001

Austrian chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel and Czech prime minister Milos Zeman have reached agreement whereby Prague will allow a study on the environmental impact and security of Temelin.

After meetings in Vienna, Czech, Austrian and European officials said on 13 December that Prague had agreed to permit international teams to conduct a review of safety measures at Temelin. The Czech and Austrian governments also agreed to install an early warning system capable of detecting potential safety problems.

Temelin will not begin commercial operation until the monitoring teams have finished the reviews of the plant, which is expected in May 2001.
