TACIS to aid Kyrgyzstan

29 April 1999

Kyrgyzstan will receive aid under the European Union’s TACIS programme for the restoration of nuclear ore processing waste sites in the southern Dzhalal-Abad region. The Kyrgyz Environment Protection Ministry and TACIS have signed an agreement launching a 500 000 euro project to monitor the storage facilities and nearby villages. Special monitoring equipment will be brought in and Kyrgyz scientists and Emergencies Ministry personnel will be trained in its use. Medical studies of the population residing in the vicinity of the storage facilities will be conducted and a detailed plan of the eventual full restoration of the site will be made. There are 23 storage facilities and 13 spoil heaps in the Dzhalal-Abad region containing nearly 2 million m3 of uranium ore processing waste.
