Swedish opposition parties drop nuclear phase out plans

28 June 2006

An opposition alliance challenging the ruling left wing coalition government in Sweden has outlined proposals to drop the nuclear phase out plan. The four opposition parties - the Moderates, the Liberals, the Christian Democrats and the Centre Party – have forged the Alliance for Sweden Party to fight the 2006 general election on a common platform.

If elected the Alliance is expected to approve upgrades of existing units although it would not approve new build. This policy is little different from the ruling Social Democrats, which also approve power upgrades for nuclear plants.
