Survey supports the Finnish fifth

3 May 2002

A month before Parliament votes on the construction of Finland's fifth commercial reactor, a survey indicates that lawmakers may narrowly approve the plans.

In the 200 member Parliament, 94 legislators said they agree, with 88 against and 18 undecided. In 1993, lawmakers rejected a similar measure by a vote of 107-90.

The five-party government has approved an application for the construction of the new reactor in January, but the decision requires Parliament's approval. A vote is set for May.

Seven committees are looking into the issue. One, the environment committee, has voted against the reactor.
