Studsvik win Belgonucleaire contract

4 March 2009

Studsvik has been awarded a potential four-year contract to consult in the decommissioning of Belgonucleaire’s fuel fabrication plant in Dessel, Belgium.

During the contract, valued at €1.8 million ($2.3 million) per year, Studsvik will advise Belgonucleaire and other contractors on the decommissioning project.

Last year, Belgonucleaire was issued the permits required for the decommissioning of MOX fuel fabrication plant which closed in 2006, and the project is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2009. The plan is to decommission the plant in order to release the buildings for other nuclear activities. The production area with glove boxes, remaining equipment and infrastructure are to be safely dismantled and packed into waste drums.

Studsvik has experience of dismantling MOX fuel plants after participating in the decommissioning of Siemens’ plant in Hanau, Germany between 2001 and 2005.

In November 2008, Studsvik won a $3.4 million contract to treat some 1400t of metallic waste that will be produced during the modernisation of Oskarshamn 3 in Sweden. The company is also constructing a Metals Recycling Facility (MRF) in the UK, near Workington in Cumbria.
