SNC Lavalin in contract with PBMR

In a deal worth R20 million ($3 million), South Africa’s PBMR has contracted for the delivery of a PMBR technology demonstration power plant at Koeberg in the Western Cape, South Africa.

A company has been formed between Canada’s SNC-Lavalin and South Africa’s Murray & Roberts (M&R) that will move the project forward.

The demonstration project is expected to be operational by 2010 with construction anticipated to begin during 2007 once all the legal and procedural matters have been finalised.

“We are pleased with this opportunity to bring our expertise in the design and construction of nuclear power plants to this key project for PBMR,” said Patrick Lamarre, president of SNC-Lavalin Nuclear. “We believe this demo power plant will set new standards in terms of safety and cost efficiency for future nuclear power plants anywhere.”

The engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) deal, together with a memorandum of understanding, represents Phase 1 of a longer-term contract, during which 15 members of M&R and SNC-Lavalin will take up positions in the PBMR headquarters in Centurion, near Pretoria and will jointly develop the detailed plans for full project delivery.
