Second Higashidori 1 starts construction

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) launched construction of the 1385MW ABWR Higashidori 1 nuclear power plant, after approval was received from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) for the plant's first construction plan. TEPCO plans to start commercial operation of the plant in March 2017, reports the Japan Atomic industry Forum's Atoms In Japan press service. A second TEPCO unit is planned for the site to begin commercial operation in 2019.

The city of Higashidori-Mura, Aomori prefecture, is on the northern tip of the Japanese island of Honshu. This latest station will become the second Higashidori station, after utility Tohoku Electric Power's 1100MW BWR which began commercial operation in December 2005. A second unit is planned to begin commercial operation in 2020.
