Safety analysis found wanting

3 October 2002

A panel checking the safety of a research reactor project in Nakhon Nayok has found its safety analysis review wanting in at least three areas.

The panel looked at the construction site, reactor design, quality assurance, the project operator's qualifications, measures to prevent sabotage, and the safety analysis review. Most criteria have been met, except for the project's environmental impact assessment report, which will go before another panel. The Argonne National Laboratory, under the US Department of Energy, which reviewed the safety analysis, has not reviewed the cooling technology.

The panel declined to specify in which areas the safety analysis review was deficient, in order "to avoid putting pressure on the commission over granting the permit."
