SA plans Koeberg recovery

8 March 2006

Eskom plans to repair unit 1 of the Koeberg nuclear power station and return it to service before commencing a two month refuelling and maintenance outage of unit 2.

Unit 1 has been down since December following a switchyard fire that has led to ongoing power cuts in the province.

Eskom has already procured all of the required spare parts, including a rotor and stator bars, to return unit 1 to service from Electricité de France.

Eskom plans to synchronise unit 1 to the grid in the middle of May before beginning the refuelling outage in the third week of May.
