Russians begin on second reactor

28 February 2001

Russian experts have started work on a second reactor at the Bushehr plant in Iran, according to Russian Atomic Energy Minister Yevgeni Adamov. Despite strong protest from the USA, Atommash, Russia’s largest manufacturer of nuclear plant equipment has announced that it has delivered the platform for the reactor.

Russian engineers began work on the first 1000MWe reactor at Bushehr in 1995 and it is now about 90% complete.

The VVER is due to come on line in 2003. Moscow will supply the initial fuel needed for commissioning and testing.
