Russia urged to end Iranian deal

3 September 2002

iran The USA urged Russia to cancel a $5 billion plan to build six reactors in Iran, claiming that the project would transfer technology that may help Iran build weapons of mass destruction.

Russia offered Iran a 10-year programme to improve its economy by building civilian reactors and non-nuclear generators and exploring for oil, coal and metal resources. Russia is proposing to build a total of six 1000MWe reactors in Iran, four at Bushehr (including the unit already under construction), and two at Akhvaz. Iran is reviewing the proposal.

US energy secretary Spencer Abraham said: "Iran's interest in nuclear civil power gives it vast domestic resources to support its nuclear weapons programme. Clearly, the expansion of Russian relations with Iran is an issue of utmost concern for us."?
