Russia asked to help finance Khmelnitsky

Ukraine has invited Russia to help finance two unfinished generating units at its Khmelnitsky and Rovno sites. The two units are to replace capacity that will be lost after the closure of the Chernobyl station. The construction programme had been discussed by Ukraine president Leonid Kuchma and the Russian First Deputy Prime Minister on 14 November. Ukraine is exploring ways of funding the project without EBRD involvement.

Higher electricity charges to pay for reactors Ukraine is to increase electricity tariffs for all categories of consumers by 4-5% from 1 January 1998 to help finance the country’s nuclear reactor completion programme, according to Energy Minister Oleksiy Sheberstov.
