Poll results in Sweden

29 January 2001

A poll recently carried out for electricity distributors Swedenenergy showed that 77% of the public are opposed to the closure of the country’s 11 nuclear plants, and that 83% think that it is important that nuclear’s lack of carbon emissions should be considered in determining Sweden’s energy policy. Only 10% said that phasing our nuclear energy should be a priority, compared with 73% for controlling greenhouse gases and 13% for protecting unspoilt rivers from hydro development.

Over half of the respondents said that they would support the use of fuel derived from nuclear weapons in the country’s reactors.
