Plan to transport fuel to Canada gets OK

30 October 2000

Canada will allow plutonium to be flown into the country from Russia on its way to Chalk River.

Transport Canada has approved the application by AECL to bring in a batch of plutonium from old Russian nuclear weapons. AECL wants to test whether MOX fuel could be successfully used in Candu reactors.

Inevitably, environmentalists have objected, arguing that in the case of an accident during transport, the planned emergency response would not deal with the cleanup.
