Perma-Fix wins several radwaste contracts

15 May 2014

Perma-Fix Environmental Services, Inc has won several radwaste treatment contracts recently for work in both the US and UK.

It has won a contract valued at $597,000 with the potential value of up to $1.2 million by URS/CH2M Oak Ridge, LLC (UCOR) to treat radioactive waste. UCOR is the Department of Energy's (DOE) prime cleanup contractor at the DOE Oak Ridge Reservation responsible for demolition and disposal of radioactively contaminated Manhattan Project era facilities. Under this contract, Perma-Fix will transport up to 100,000 gallons of waste contaminated with low levels of radioactive materials.

The waste will go to the Perma-Fix Northwest Facility (PFNW) located in Richland, Washington. It will be thermally treated in the PFNW bulk processing units so that it can be safely disposed at a commercial radioactive disposal facility in Clive, Utah, or at a DOE-approved disposal site. DOE evaluated the options for disposition of the waste and determined that using Perma-Fix's capabilities provided the safest and most cost-effective means to process the waste.

Perma-Fix has also been awarded a new task order with a maximum ceiling value of $1,200,000 to provide waste treatment and disposal services in support of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

In 2012, the Department of Energy (DOE)'s prime contractor at Los Alamos, Los Alamos National Security, LLC (LANS) issued a $250 million "Master Task Order Agreement (MTOA)" for transportation, recycling, treatment and/or disposal for radioactive and hazardous wastes generated from clean-up and on-going operations at LANL. Perma-Fix was a member of Idaho Falls-based engineering and environmental services firm Portage, Inc.'s winning proposal under this MTOA and has recently been awarded a task to process Radioactive Liquid Waste (RLW) bottoms projected to range from 50,000 to 100,000 gallons annually. Perma-Fix has also won task orders in recent months under this MTOA from other prime contract holders to provide waste treatment services for LANL wastes.

To accomplish the scope of this order, Perma-Fix will receive the liquid wastes at the Perma-Fix Northwest Facility in Richland, Washington. The wastes will be volume reduced by utilizing Perma-Fix's thermal destruction technology and disposed as solid low-level radioactive wastes at a DOE approved disposal facility.

Finally UK subsidiary Perma-Fix Environmental Services UK Ltd has been awarded a contract initially valued at approximately $2,200,000 (£1,300,000) by Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd (DSRL) located in Thurso, Scotland. This contract provides for the disposition of mercury waste streams for the Dounreay Site. This award was the result of a procurement issued by DSRL to treat wastes generated from decommissioning and demolition activities currently ongoing at Dounreay. Perma-Fix has designed a mobile system for DSRL, utilizing patented treatment technology, which will treat radioactively contaminated mercury wastes to facilitate safe disposal.

Perma-Fix Environmental Services' nuclear waste services include management and treatment of radioactive and mixed waste for hospitals, research labs and institutions, federal agencies, including the DOE, the Department of Defense, and the commercial nuclear industry. The company operates four nuclear waste treatment facilities: Gainesville, Florida, Diversified Scientific Services (DSSI) in Kingston, Tennessee, Materials and Energy Corp in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Perma-Fix Northwest in Richland, Washington.
