Orano wins nuclear fuel repackaging contract from CEA

French nuclear fuel company Orano said on 7 October that it had won a €12 million contract from the CEA at the end of July, in partnership with AEMCO, for the turnkey supply and operation of a processing and packaging unit for legacy nuclear fuels at the Cadarache site.

AEMCO, a subsidiary of REEL International, is a turnkey solutions provider in the fields of maintenance, safety, design, manufacturing and retrofitting, as well as a supplier of specific industrial toolings.

After removing the old equipment and cleaning up the workshop to house the new processing unit, the teams will install and operate equipment specifically designed for the repackaging in canisters of some 120 radioactive fuel assemblies.

The entire project, from design studies to the final clean-up of the is expected to take a six years.
