NRC upholds licensing Board’s decision on Calvert Cliffs

7 February 1999

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission in December upheld a decision by an Atomic Safety and Licensing Board rejecting the need for a public hearing on Baltimore Gas & Electric’s license renewal application for the two-unit Calvert Cliffs nuclear station in Maryland (2 x 850 MWe PWRs).

The NRC let stand the ASLB’s 16 October ruling rejecting a petition for public hearings from the National Whistleblower Center, the only group that requested one. The ASLB said the National Whistleblower Center submitted its petition late.

Baltimore Gas &Electric has applied to the NRC for a 20-year licence renewal for the plants. The operating licence for Calvert Cliffs Unit 1 expires in 2014; for Unit 2 in 2016.
