23 November 2005

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved a request by Arizona Public Service to increase the generating capacity of units 1 and 3 at the Palo Verde Nuclear plant by 2.9%, primarily through replacing the plant’s steam generators.

The power uprates at each unit, located near Phoenix, Arizona, increases the net generating capacity of the reactors from 1270MWe to 1313MWe and 1317MWe respectively. The uprate is expected to be completed by the end of December for unit 1, and by the end of 2007 for unit 3.
