No waste agreement

28 February 2001

Russia has not taken and will not take radioactive waste from Taiwan, said atomic energy minister Yuri Bespalko.

He denied media reports that a Taiwanese company plans to supply radioactive waste to Russia. “The Atomic Energy Ministry observes and strictly complies with the current legislative ban on the import of radioactive waste into Russia.” However, if it is not waste radioactive material, but spent nuclear fuel that can be reused by nuclear plants, the ministry is prepared to co-operate with foreign countries and take such fuel for reprocessing.
