New US energy strategy report

6 March 2001

It sets out six priorities: enhancing proven energy sources; encouraging energy efficiency; stimulating global energy trade and development; promoting energy technology R&D; balancing energy use with environmental concerns; and unifying policy efforts.

Enormous capital investment in all forms of energy including nuclear is seen as a key to the nation's future and, on the electricity front, that means building about 20GWe of new capacity per year to 2020.

The report comments on the policy inconsistency of having environmental credits available to energy producers which adversely affect air quality but not to nuclear and hydro sources which don't.

The report will be submitted to the World Energy Council as the US contribution to international policy development.
