New unit for Kalinin

3 July 2002

Russia's Kalinin plant will have a fourth unit, according to deputy atomic energy minister Bulat Nigmatulin. Construction of the fourth reactor was frozen some time ago, but its completion is now economically desirable in view of the rising price of natural gas, he said. Unit 4 is 15% completed and the construction infrastructure can easily be transferred from the site of unit 3, which is currently under construction and due to start operation in March 2003.
