New plants planned

30 March 2001

British Energy is drawing up plans to build a chain of nuclear power plants to replace its seven AGRs, the first of which is due to be shut down in about 2014. British Energy said that it believed that rising prices for natural gas and concerns over long-term supplies from the North Sea made nuclear power more attractive.

A spokesman for British Energy said it was keen to keep its 25% share of the UK generating market.
