New mine proposed

3 July 2002

A new $450 million copper mine - the Lumwana Copper Project - is being proposed by Australia's Equinox Resources in partnership with Phelps Dodge of the USA.

The project is expected to start production in 2006. Besides copper production, the venture would also produce uranium as a by-product in the third to fifth year of production, at an estimated rate of 1200t U3O8 per year.
