New heat exchangers for Dungeness A

29 November 2000

The Serck Industrial division of Honeywell Serck has won a contract to renovate water-cooled heat exchangers for Dungeness A in Kent, UK, as part of an ongoing refurbishment programme in the reactor 1 turbine hall.

Honeywell Serck will overhaul a total of eight Parsons heat exchanger units that were fitted in pairs 30 years ago. The smallest is 2m long and 2.5m wide, the largest is 8m long and 1.5m wide. The heat exchangers are connected to the main turbines of reactor 1 and heat feedwater. The turbine is an impulse/reaction condensing type, with one single flow HP and one dual flow LP cylinder. It is one of four on the site and operates at 1500rpm at a steam temperature of 363°C and pressure of 22.4 bar.
