MOX lease requires German consent

30 October 2000

A plan to lease Russian MOX fuel for use in west European reactors appears to depend on obtaining consent from the German government.

Minatom says that it would not be possible for it to burn the MOX quickly enough in its own VVER reactors to meet the preferred USA timescale, but leasing the fuel for use in western reactors already licensed to burn MOX would enable it to do so, as well as raising cash to help with the disposition programme.
