More Russian equipment for China’s Tianwan NPP

3 September 2015

Izhorskiye Zavody, part of Russia's OMZ group, has completed a set of reactor coolant pumps (RCPs) for unit 4 of China's Tianwan NPP in Jiangsu province. Two RCPs have already been shipped to the plant and another two will be sent this autumn. Under contract signed in 2010, Izhorskiye Zavody manufactures the primary circuit equipment for Phase II (units 3 and 4) of Tianwan plant, which is built to the advanced design AES-91 with VVER-1000 reactors. Construction of Tianwan 4 began in September 2013. There are four VVER-1000 nuclear units at Tianwan - two commercially operational and two under construction.

To date, Izhorskiye Zavody has produce and shipped to China the essential equipment for unit 3 including the reactor pressure vessel, pressuriser, equipment for the surveillance well, as well as RCP shells and components of the main circulation pipelines.

Tianwan is also receiving equipment from Russian machine engineering works, ZiO-Podolsk, a subsidiary of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom. ZiO-Podolsk has manufactured the suppression chamber (part of the pressuriser system) with fixing components and internals for unit 4, and shipped them off at the end of August. The equipment, weighing 15t, is made of austenitic chromium-nickel steel. Its service life is 40 years.

ZiO-Podolsk earlier in August shipped out two steam generator collectors for unit 4. The collector is welded on top of the horizontal VVER-type steam generator casing. It collects the steam, which is then led to the turbine on the secondary, non-nuclear side of the unit. The company had already sent two steam generators. The four steam generators (with component units) for unit 3 were manufactured and supplied to the site in 2014. Each PGV-1000M steam generator weighs 378t and has an operating life of 40 years.
