L&T delivers steam generators for 700MW PHWR

7 July 2015

India's L&T Heavy Engineering has successfully delivered the first indigenously design steam generator for a 700MW pressurised heavy water reactor, Kakrapar 3, in Gujarat.

The first 215t steam generator arrived at the nuclear plant site in mid June. A second SG is due to be dispatched in July.

The completion of first 700MWe PHWR Steam Generator is a major milestone towards 'Make in India' vision," said Mr. M.V. Kotwal, president, Heavy Engineering & Member of the Board, Larsen & Toubro.

Steam generators are critical safety Class 1 equipment. They enable heat transfer from the primary circuit heavy water to generate steam, which drives the turbines to generate electricity.

L&T and nuclear plant operator Nuclear Power Corporation of India jointly developed the steam generators. L&T provided 3D multi-phase thermal hydraulic analysis and safety analysis, while the state-owned Nuclear Fuel Complex in Hydrabad manufactured the nickel-iron-chromium alloy U-tubes.

L&T Special Steel and Heavy Forgings, a joint venture of L&T and NPCIL, manufactures SGs and other heavy forgings at its plant in Hazira.
