LLW repository site acquired

3 September 2003

The Australian government has announced that a site near Woomera in the South Australian Outback will be used to store low-level radioactive waste.

Finance minister Nick Minchin said the site, located about 500km north of Adelaide, could be operating within a year. The site was acquired by a compulsory purchase order. Minchin said the decision was made urgently for a number of reasons, including plans by the South Australian state government to turn the site into a public park. The South Australian government has forced a federal court judicial review, expected to be held in December, into the compulsory acquisition of the land.
