L3 MAPPS to develop simulator for Terrestrial IMSR

20 July 2018

Canada-based L3 MAPPS is to develop real-time simulation for Terrestrial Energy’s Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR), under a new agreement announced 19 July.

The simulation will be used to support the engineering development of the IMSR power plant design, its licensing, and ultimately, operator training.

“It is a natural fit for Terrestrial Energy – a frontrunner in the development of Generation IV reactor technology – to join forces with L3 MAPPS, the leading developer of nuclear power plant simulation technology,” noted Rangesh Kasturi, president of L3 MAPPS.

Terrestrial Energy, which is engaged with regulators and industrial partners, is hoping to complete IMSR engineering and to commission the first IMSR power plants in the late 2020s. In March, Terrestrial Energy and US utility Energy Northwest signed a memorandum of understanding on terms for the possible siting, construction and operation of the reactor at the US Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory.

Last year, Terrestrial identified modelling and simulation as a key priority in 2017, according to company CEO Simon Irish.

“IMSR power plants are transformative energy technology solutions," Irish said. "They can make an important contribution to the world’s growing demand for clean, low-cost and reliable energy. Our relationship with L3 MAPPS is another important step towards fully realising that potential.”
