Kozloduy liquid waste facility is completed

The national body responsible for radioactive waste management in Bulgaria has accepted the commissioning of liquid radioactive waste reprocessing facility Dunai.

The purpose of the Dunai facility is to solve the problem of liquid radioactive waste reprocessing generated during the works on decommissioning of the four power units with VVER-440 reactors at NPP Kozloduy, as well as to mitigate radiation risks arising from the storage of the liquid waste. The LRW reprocessing facility project lifetime is 20 years.

Facility construction was carried out under the International Programme for decommissioning of four power units of Kozloduy NPP, funded by the European Commission. The project investor is the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). General contractor is JSC Atomstroyexport (ASE), which won an international tender announced by the EBRD. Technological diagram of the facility was developed by the project scientific supervisor Russian state company MosNPO Radon. In the facility construction there were involved Bulgarian companies –AtomToploProekt OOD as a designer and Enemona AO, which completed construction and installation works, commissioning and testing.

The merged company JSC NIAEP – JSC Atomstroyexport (ASE) with partners will continue to assist in facility service during the warranty period, which is 36 months.
