Konrad repository is now being licensed

3 June 2002

On 30 April, 2002, the Lower Saxony cabinet completed the plan verification procedure for the repository for radioactive waste in the former iron ore mine at Konrad. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will receive the licence four weeks later to ensure that the Lower Saxony parliament has the opportunity to discuss the licence.

As there will immediately be court cases against the licence, there will be judicial procedures for at least 3-4 years. Only after the completion of all court cases does the licence become final, and then BfS has to make use of it within five years before it expires.

Moreover, according to a statement by the Lower Saxony minister for the environment, Wolfgang Jüttner, the whole project will be politically controversial even if the court cases are successful.
