Konrad is being licensed

3 July 2002

The Lower Saxony government has issued the verification licence for the former iron mine at Konrad as a repository for radwaste. The licence has been issued to the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) on 5 June, 2002.

The licence has not been issued with an immediate execution permit, so any court cases against the licence will delay further work on the repository. Such cases must be brought between 27 June and 26 July.

In protest against the issuing of the licence, three environmental associations (Nabu, BUND, and Robin Wood) withdrew from membership of the working group for selection of a repository.
