IST to supply PBMR systems

1 March 2002

IST Nuclear, a subsidiary of the Integrators of System Technology (IST) Group, has been appointed as the sole supplier of three key systems by PBMR (Pty). If the PBMR project at Koeberg in South Africa gets approval, IST will supply these systems for the demonstration plant as well as for the first 10 commercially produced units, wherever they are constructed.

Harry Coetzee, group CEO, estimated the supply of the support systems' components to the 11 units at over 2 billion rand ($175 million). The systems are for: fuel handling and storage; reactivity control and shutdown; and the gas systems.

The PBMR project is currently in the detailed feasibility and environmental impact assessment phase. IST has been involved in the conceptualisation, design and development of the PBMR technology since 1990.
