An intermediate-level waste (ILW) storage facility at the Brunsbüttel nuclear plant in northern Germany has begun operations.
The facility, located in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, is so far storing one Castor container with 52 spent fuel rods.
Under Germany's nuclear phaseout agreement, spent fuel rods have not been sent abroad for reprocessing from 1 July 2005, requiring the development of on-site storage facilities.
The office for radioactive protection has approved storage of up to 80 Castor containers for up to 40 years at the Brunsbüttel site.
