India's BHEL wins order for turbine islands for Gorakhpur and Kaiga

6 September 2021

India’s Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) said it has received orders from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) for turbine islands for six nuclear power pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) units - four at Gorakhpur NPP in Haryana State and two at Kaiga NPP in Karnataka State.

BHEL said the order for the design, manufacture and supply of the turbine islands, worth INR108 billion ($1.5 billion), is "the largest in its history."

In July, NPCIL awarded BHEL a INR14 billion contract to supply twelve 700MWe Indian-designed PHWR steam generators to be built at four sites including Gorakhpur and Kaiga.

India's 12th Five-Year Plan for 2012-17, which was amended in 2017 and 2018, plans to build a total of four PHWRs at Gorakhpur nuclear power plant. The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board approved the start of pre-construction earthworks at the site in 2018.

The two PHWRs planned for construction at the Kaiga site will become the fifth and sixth units. There are already four operating PHWRs with a capacity of 202MWe each.
