India to ratify nuclear safety convention

1 April 2005

The Convention on Nuclear Safety, which makes it obligatory for countries to apply safety principles to the construction, operation and regulation of land-based civilian nuclear power plants, is to be ratified by India.

The convention was adopted in Vienna in June 1994 and requires obligatory reporting and review procedures, although safety remains the responsibility of national governments. India's Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that the instrument of ratification was submitted to the director general, International Atomic Energy Agency, who is the depository of the convention.
