Horizon funding for Welsh colleges

11 August 2016

Horizon Nuclear Power, which plans to build the UK’s Wylfa Newydd NPP in North Wales has announced the provision of GBP1m ( $1.2m) of funding for Grwp Llandrillo Menai college. Horizon Nuclear Power said the funding will help with the design, construction and associated infrastructure of a purpose-built engineering centre next to the existing energy centre at the college’s Llangefni Campus on the island of Anglesey. The announcement follows a pledge of GBP5m towards the GBP10m centre at Coleg Menai – one of the three colleges that form Grwp Llandrillo Menai – by the Welsh government in 2015. Horizon said it will also provide technical support and advice to Coleg Menai, as the facility will cater for the technical training of Horizon’s apprentices. Horizon, which was acquired by Hitachi of Japan in November 2012, is developing plans to build at least 5,400MWe of new nuclear plant at Wylfa on Anglesey and Oldbury-on-Severn in Gloucestershire.
