Hitachi appoints three UK partners for Wylfa Newydd

Horizon's Wylfa NewyddHitachi Nuclear Energy Europe  Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Japan's Hitachi, Ltd has announced the appointment of three additional partners to support delivery of the planned UK Wylfa Newydd NPP- Atkins, KBR (Kellogg, Brown and Root Limited) and Wood, all UK companies.  

Hitachi Nuclear Energy Europe is supplying the UK Advanced Boiling Water Reactors (ABWRs) for Wylfa Newydd, acting as architect engineer for the project, under contract to Horizon Nuclear Power, also owned by Hitachi.

Atkins, part of the SNC-Lavalin Group, will support on civil engineering design for the nuclear island; KBR will work on project controls; and Wood will support architect engineering. 

"Wood, has been involved in every nuclear new build in UK history," noted Eric Chassard, project director, Hitachi Nuclear Energy Europe. "KBR and Atkins are also world leaders in their fields - with clear and proven experience on projects of this scale and complexity. The pedigree, expertise and detailed knowledge of all three partners are second to none.”

Engineering, consulting and construction company Black & Veatch said it expects to be subcontracted by Wood to provide technical services to support contracts required for the engineering, procurement and construction of Wylfa Newydd.

Horizon plans to build at least 5.8GWe of new nuclear power capacity at Wylfa Newydd on the Isle of Anglesey and Oldbury-on-Severn in South Gloucestershire. Its stations will employ up to 850 people each once operational with a construction workforce expected to peak at 9000.
