Hatch gets licence renewal

1 February 2002

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has renewed the operating licence of units 1 and 2 of the Edwin I Hatch nuclear plant for an additional 20 years.

Operators Southern Nuclear Operating Company submitted an application to the NRC on February 29, 2000, to renew the licences for Hatch 1, which expires on August 6, 2014, and unit 2, which expires on June 13, 2018. The NRC conducted extensive environmental and safety reviews of the licence renewal application in accordance with Parts 51 and 54 of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, respectively. Both units should now be able to operate for a total of 60 years.

Southern owns a controlling stake in the plant. Privately-owned Oglethorpe Power, the Georgia Municipal Electrical Authority and city of Dalton own smaller stakes in Hatch.

Eight units in the USA have received 20-year licence extensions to date, and a further 14 final applications are under review.
