2 July 2010

A partnership of AMEC, Balfour Beatty and AREVA has been awarded the Early Contractor Engagement phase by Sellafield Limited for the Highly Active Effluent Facility project. The Sellafield Limited total scheme budget is in excess of GBP 250 million (EUR 302 million).

The Highly Active Liquid Effluent Facility is a new facility to store radioactive waste, which arises from nuclear processing operations, comprising a series of high integrity highly active storage tanks in a seismically qualified reinforced concrete building.

The initial phase is a two year project definition, design and cost programme which will commence immediately, followed by, on satisfactory completion and there still being a business requirement, a four year procurement construction and commissioning phase, due to start in mid 2012.

The HALEF partnership consists of three partners. They are:

-AMEC (joint venture leader) - project management and detailed design and installation of mechanical/electrical/control systems,

-AREVA (back end business group) – engineering management, process design, procurement and commissioning of highly active storage tanks and associated equipment

-Balfour Beatty (BBMCE) - design and construction of civil and building works, for civil, structural and architectural design
